East Groningen

East Groningen

East Groningen is situated in the province of Groningen which is the north eastern most province of The Netherlands. It is a predominantly rural region, with a number of small villages and three regional centres (Veendam, Stadskanaal, Winschoten). Similar to the other study areas, the population of East Groningen is largely dependent on nearby regional centres, such as the City of Groningen. It has been formally labelled as a ‘population decline area’ as a result of both ageing and outmigration of younger adults who move to nearby urban areas for employment and education. This has subsequently also resulted in regional unemployment being higher than the national average.
