Following completion of the STAYin(g)Rural Household Survey during Autumn/Winter 2019, the 3000+ responses were entered into a secure software programme to enable data analysis. As part of the survey, respondents were asked if they would be willing to participate in a follow-up interview during Spring/Summer 2020. The purpose of these interviews is to build on the survey findings and to explore in greater detail why people decide to both live and then stay in rural areas. We will also discuss the various experiences people have of living in the different study areas.

However, as has been the case for many in similar situations, the recent coronavirus pandemic has affected the progression of the study, and ‘lockdown’ has meant that the second phase of data collection, which was to involve these interviews has had to be temporarily postponed. In the meantime, the team continue to analyse the survey data which is showing some interesting findings and helping further the understanding on why people stay in rural areas.

As restrictions begin to ease, the research team hope to be in a position to recommence data collection towards the end of the summer months, dependent upon public health guidance. They wish to reassure the public that the health and safety of the local residents is of paramount importance, and public health guidelines will be followed at all times.  A researcher will be in touch with those who agreed to take part in due course.
